These hands...

09.18.12

Our hands do so many things throughout the day.  I think we take them for granted or forget how useful they are.  In Haiti, I think I am definitely more aware of my hands and the things that they touch, how often I wash them and the last time they were covered in hand sanitizer ;)  But today as I looked through the pictures I took, I was struck by a common theme...all of the pictures involved the use of our hands.  Whether we were holding the hand of another to direct them where to go, gave a friend a five or a hand shake as a greeting or affirmation of friendship, learned a new game, washed the laundry, or stretched out to our sides as far as they could go as we danced in the rain!

Our hands did a great job of accomplishing the school work we needed to get done this am!  Our morning went SO much better!  Karys attitude from yesterday was non-existent, and while Gracie had a fever and was feeling under the weather, she still came and joined us and did her work as well!  This was so reassuring and provided hope to me in more ways than one!

Gracie also used her hands to respond to email that she and the other kiddos had received.  I incorporated this into a school activity-reading and computer and even a little language arts with sentence formation, right?!?!  It was a little uncomfortable for her just in the sense that she isn’t used to typing and is a little slower and had so much to tell people and not enough patience to stick with it, so I did help her type out what she wanted to say :)

Karys used her hands to help Brooke do art with the little ones.  This time has been going really well from what I can tell.  Brooke is very gifted and has gotten things pretty well organized.  One of the girls has been going with her to help out pretty regularly and they have really been enjoying that!

Gracie used her hands to do the laundry!  She is SUCH a helper!  She is quick to do laundry and hang up clothes, quick to do the dishes setting by the sink, and often puts our clothes away without being asked.  I love her servant heart...she is much like her daddy in that they like to do those tasks and really are speaking a love language in doing so!
I appreciated the hands that made our lunch today!  We had a GREAT Haitian meal of rice, legit vegetables (carrots, potatoes, beans!), a yummy Creole sauce, and plantains!
Thank you for the hands that greet the people who wait to be seen.  We have gate days on Tues, Thurs, and Fri where ppl are given the opportunity to come into our gates and talk with our staff about their needs.  This is the view of the waiting area today...the first things Haitians do when they greet each other, no matter the reason, is shake or touch their hands.
Oh, the fun things we can do with our hands!  It was fun to watch Christina teach Karys the "Cat's Cradle" game with a piece of scrap string.  I so remember playing that as a child and Karys thought it was the coolest thing!

I was very tired at Creole today :( and eventually my hands were the hands to hold my sweet, tired, sweaty Addy Grace as she fell asleep.  This then went on to feed into my fatigue--it was a rough night!  Toby was awake, Addyson woke up b/c she peed and wanted a snack, and Karys was also awake during the night :(  Luckily, Christina was so genorous to offer me a place to lay my head when we were done with Creole, so I slept on her bed until Toby woke up from his nap!  So GRATEFUL for that!

He’s got the WHOLE world in HIS hands...

He's got the little bitty baby in his hands
He's got the whole world in his hands...

He's got you and me brother in his hands he's got you and me sister in his hands
He's got the whole world in his hands...

He's got everybody here in his hands
He's got the whole world in his hands...
He's got the whole world in his hands...

Thank you, Jesus...
