Today was a pretty productive day, but it also definitely had its challenges! We started in on school today. Brooke took Addy and headed off with her to do preschool. Addy was so excited, and I actually think that Brooke was too :) They had a great morning just doing some worksheets, coloring and just hanging out in the preschool room.
The girls were also initially excited about our first day of school! Gracie was pretty tired though and not quite herself. She hasn’t been feeling the best, but man, she sure gave her best effort today to do things and get her work done. Karys was challenging. We definitely fought the control battle today. She wanted to do the paper her way or the highway. I wasn’t about to give in or be soft on the first day...maybe this was the wrong move. But I tried to stick to my guns...we started with Brain Quest questions and that went really well! Then we moved into some math worksheets and Karys was just having the hardest time focusing. She often said, “I am not smart enough for this” or “I don’t know this yet”, but it was just simple math and coloring that was almost review from Kindergarten. She wanted to do the paper inside, then outside, then she wanted a different paper and then she just wasn’t going to do it at all. I finally dismissed Gracie to go eat breakfast and even left Karys with the paper to go get breakfast myself. I sat down with her at the table and said that I would sit here with her until she was done. “I want to do it over here...” “That is fine...but I am over here and so is the paper and this is where we are going to stay so let me know when you can join us.” Finally, she did come and sit with me...slowly she got the problems down and then started in on the coloring and actually got to a point where I was helping her and she was having a GREAT time! HEr attitude totally shifted in the process. Man, not exactly what I envisioned for our first day of school!
There was lots of hustle and bustle in the kitchen today! We have had a TERRIBLE time with bugs infesting our volunteer house kitchen area...if you are a potential visitor or volunteer, HAVE NO FEAR! The guys of COTP tore out the entire kitchen countertops today and bug bombed the place! We are hoping to have the new counters in in the next week and go through all of our kitchen stuff and clean house :) It may not seem like it, but it was a VERY exciting thing to have happen!
We also started Creole today...I don’t have much to say about this right now. I am not sure how I am feeling about this. Today went well! But I could use your prayers in this area!
After we were done the girls and I had a GREAT time digging into the VP’s book stash! When Kirk was down in Feb he brought 2 suitcases of books with him, knowing they would be moving down soon after! Most of ours are on the container, so we had a GREAT time doing this and even got to check a few out to bring home :) We stayed so long after Creole class that we ended up having dinner with the VP’s (mac n cheese-a new standard for having guests for dinner :) The kids got to eat their dinner on the roof of Kirk and Christina’s place and this day went from being “horrible” because we started school...to being the “best day ever!” in the words of Karys :)
It is amazing how quickly things can change and how something as simple as eating mac n cheese on the roof can turn a day’s events into the BEST DAY EVER!!!
